Piety Sculpture in Donín
A small sculpture titled Piety can be found at the crossroads on the right-hand side of the road to Chotyně at the very end of Donín. The sculpture is made from sandstone, as is its plinth, on which there is an inscription telling us that the sculpture was commissioned by Josef Möse in 1803 and later repairs in 1860 were paid for by Ignatz Bernat.
On the lower part of the sandstone plinth there is a prismatic shaft finished with richly profiled ledge. The sculpture itself sits on further prismatic shaft and there is a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows showing the suffering she feels with the body of Christ across her lap. She is in a leaning position against the simple cross. Situated on the cross there is a plaque with the inscrition I.N.R.I. On the shaft the now illegible inscription contains the following:
“O you all passing by,
take a look at your Saviour
resting across the lap of Our Lady of Sorrows.
Do not be ungrateful
for His love so great.”
Though the text is no longer legible, the information was found in the inventory of monuments from 1837.
